Patient monitor cable This is becoming a very popular career in the health care industry. The students who graduate from ultrasound technician training are competent and well educated in sonography technologies. The health care field has an urgent need for the ultrasound technician and is actively pursuing these technicians who are training at the best training schools. The various health care fields are in competition with each other to attract the best of the qualified sonographers for their agencies. Many fields of medicine use ultrasound as therapy as well as a method of diagnosis.
The ultrasound technician is also known as a sonographer or ultrasonographer. He or she works with special equipment in various fields to produce structural images of the patients’ bodies. This is done by high frequency inaudible sound waves emitted by the equipment to harmlessly penetrate body tissues. An accurate picture is then created from the recorded sound waves to show the condition of the body. The sound imaging technology works almost the same as the machinery that produces radar that maps the ocean floor. The only difference is that the entire human body is mapped with the ultrasound equipment. Technicians can specialize in one of the following job areas that include nuerosonology to inspect the spinal cord and the brain, ophthalmology to map a patient’s eyes and surrounding muscles, echocardiography for diagnosing conditions of the heart, gynecology and obstetrics for the female reproductive system, and for viewing conditions of the abdominal area.
The ultrasonographer prepares patients to have the ultrasound procedure before performing the procedure. This involves explaining the process to the patient as well as gathering information and recording any conditions that may be relevant to the information recorded by the ultrasound equipment. For instance, if a mammogram is performed, the ultrasound technician records the results of the patient’s self-examination and any history of breast cancer in the patient’s family. Before the test a gel substance is usually applied to the skin of the test area on the patient, to help transmit the sound waves. This helps to produce an image that is more clear and accurate. Patient monitor cable The ultrasonographer examines images projected on the screen of the machine to check for abnormalities in the tissues of the patient and the images are stored. The technician may be responsible for maintaining and managing the equipment, especially in smaller facilities.
Anyone wanting to become an ultrasound technician needs to attend a technician’s school and complete a two-year Associate’s degree. The school must be certified by CAAHEP—Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Applicants must be a high school graduate, preferably with a background in science, math or in subjects related to health care. The training program for future ultrasonographers covers physiology, anatomy, physics, medical ethics and use and maintenance of equipment.
After completing the program, a graduate student can register with ARDMS—the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography as a professional ultrasonographer. The ARDMS is widely accepted in the health care field and is an employment standard across the country. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistic, an ultrasound technician earned an average yearly salary of $57,150 in May 2006.
